Meet Christine
I am an artist who was born in Ireland. I have lived and worked in Dublin, Paris and New York, and have called Toronto my home for many years.
Living in Canada and experiencing the Canadian winters and summers, I am continually inspired by the beauty and resilience of the natural world. This fragile beauty of nature is the major influence on my art. I strive to represent the miracle of nature in modes that are colourful, expressive and accessible.
I hope that my art will bring brightness and joy into people’s homes and lives and remind them of the importance of appreciating and preserving nature.
I take photos walking through the park and around my neighbourhood. Colour is what attracts my attention first, whether it’s flowers or trees in the park, fruit and vegetables outside the grocery store, the contents of a shop window, colourful clothes on a passer-by, or any number of other things. Many of these photos then become reference materials for painting ideas and colour schemes.
I paint in colourful layers with acrylics on gallery-stretched canvas or cradled wood panels, using brushes, stencils and other mark-making tools. I use different viscosities of acrylic paint, together with acrylic mediums, to achieve my desired semi-abstract outcome. I also design greeting cards, clothing, silk scarves and accessories from my art.
I am an active member of West Toronto Artists, a west-end Toronto community-based art group.
